Why you should start by pestering friends for business.
When looking for clients when I started my advertising agency I started with my friends. This may seem like a bad idea at first but it is a huge confidence builder and an excellent stepping stone to other clients.
By offering to do your friends projects at a discount or even as a trial run for free you get experience working with your new team and you get valuable work out the other end for your portfolio.
Even presenting yourself as a viable and trustworthy business partner to your friends and acquaintances can be nerve-racking, but is a lot more doable than talking to someone you don’t know about your business credentials. The confidence boost and general feeling that ‘you can do this’ is invaluable as you move on to talking to people to whom you have been recommended or with whom you have had no previous contact. The important thing is that you have some work behind you and some kind of back up to what you are telling potential clients.
So, run through all the contacts you already have before trying to make new ones. This will make doing business with new contacts a great deal easier and you will be able to tackle each new deal with more and more confidence.
